DESIGN CHALLENGE

32 DAY

Create one high-quality graphic per day for all 32 NHL teams. Inspired by the “Design a Day” concept, the goal was to push my creative boundaries, sharpen my design skills, and build a dynamic, sports-focused portfolio. Each day presented a new team, a new visual concept, and an opportunity to experiment and grow as a designer.

THE PROJECT

The Challenge

The biggest challenge was time. Each graphic had to be completed in roughly 1–3 hours, often alongside coursework and other commitments. Generating fresh, unique ideas for 32 different teams without repeating concepts tested both creativity and efficiency. Sourcing high-quality images and assets sometimes proved difficult, requiring quick problem-solving and adaptation. Additionally, I used the project as a chance to explore different techniques and approaches to discover my personal style as a sports designer.

solution & approach

To tackle these challenges, I planned rough concepts in advance, mapping out ideas for each team so I could spend more time executing rather than deciding what to create. I experimented with layouts, color palettes, typography, and visual styles, which helped me identify emerging patterns in my personal design style. Working under a tight time constraint encouraged efficiency while also allowing room for creative exploration. When obstacles arose—like unavailable images or concepts that didn’t translate as expected—I adapted on the fly, often discovering unexpected solutions and new directions for my work.

key Takeaways & outcomes

The challenge reinforced that progress is more important than perfection. Completing a design each day, even when it wasn’t flawless, pushed my skills forward and strengthened my discipline. Planning ahead and managing time effectively proved essential, and working within constraints sparked creativity in ways I hadn’t anticipated.

I successfully completed all 32 graphics without skipping a single day. Over the course of the challenge, I saw measurable growth in speed, problem-solving, and stylistic exploration. The final series is a cohesive, portfolio-ready collection that demonstrates versatility, adaptability, and a maturing personal design style—proof that consistent practice and creative risk-taking lead to meaningful growth.
